To rob a
thief is a series composed of drawings that are inspired, appropriated or even
lifted off of the work of Weegee (Arthur Feelig). His photographs appeared in
different New York newspapers throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s. This series is
an act of piracy. And it is motivated by my wish to homage the work of a great
artist and, also, by my taste for fabulation. This is mostly represented by the
inclusion of small fictions: anachronisms, self portraits and other artifacts
that are not present in the originals. I believe my piracy of Weege’s work has
certain affinities with his own practices, which is why I only work with those
images of his in which the subject did not want his image to be taken.
