I started this series with with the intention of only making myself one graphite palette for personal reference. In the palette each paper butterfly shows the total range of one pencil, their labels tell the type of pencil used, the day and time created and the emotional state the butterfly was created in. This way I can reference mood as well as medium when starting a new project. The boxes took off from there as I experimented with word play and object portraiture. The theme of each box varies but carries the similar thread of fragility and memory, the need to record that which is always slipping out of our hands. The theme of labels is also very strong, either being tied to them or breaking free of them and how that idea realizes itself in the individual object.
The boxes in order of appearance are: Etude, Fractured Portrait, Graphite Palette, The Great Escape,
A Sudden Revelation, Self Portrait, and Sonnet.
